British Midland International Airlines took birth in the year 1949, known as Derby Aviation. It changed its name to British Midland Airways in the year 1964. During 1970s, the airline further increased its domestic and international passenger services, which also included long haul routes. British Midland International Airlines continued growing in 1980s and in 1982, it formed its headquarters at Castle Donington, close to East Midlands Airport. In 1986, it changed its name to British Midland. BMI offered a separate Business Class cabin, exclusive for business travellers in 1993, and became the first European carrier to do so. It joined Star Alliance on July 1st, 2000.
